NO CITIZEN MUST BE SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR
BELIEFS OR OPINION
Appeal for the liberation of Bahar Kimyongür
Bahar Kimyongür is a Belgian citizen who has consistently stood up against the
many violations of Human Rights in Turkey over the past ten years.
While he is guilty of no crime or act of violence whether in Belgium, Turkey
or anywhere else a Belgian court sentenced him to five year emprisonment on 7
november 2006.
Such verdict results from the new anti-terrorist laws inspired by the Bush
administration and implemented because of the Turkish government's lobbying.
The Belgian State thus turned political opponents into criminals. Bahar
Kimyongür, Musa Asoglu, Sukriye Akar, and Kaya Saz serve long prison sentences
as members of the DHKP-C, a Turkish revolutionary organisation.
The condemnation of Bahar Kimyongür means that voicing divergent views and
acting accordingly can result in a several years in jail. This cannot be
accepted: voicing divergent views is not terrorism!
Bahar Kimyongür has become a symbol, the symbol of the threats "war on
terrorism" casts upon such fundamental rights as freedom of expression and
freedom of association. Anyone who stands up against injustice may become the
next victim.
We consider the condemnation of Bahar Kimyongür as utterly inacceptable.
WE DEMAND FREEDOM FOR BAHAR !
